The Signmakers of Montreal (Les Enseignistes de Montréal) is a brand-new web documentary about the people and techniques behind the over-sized words and images that have enlivened urban centres across the world since long before the invention of neon. Focusing on the city of Montreal, the film features interviews with several experienced signmakers, a self-taught sign painter, and two sign collectors. It also includes visits to the Ville de Montréal sign shop and a guided tour of the Montréal Signs Project, a permanent exhibition at Concordia University. This visually rich film offers unique insights into the ways that sign-saturated cityscapes have changed over time, for better and worse, and even explores the imaginative reuse of two split-flap information signs from the Montréal-Mirabel International Airport in a recent exhibition about migration and land rights. This screening is not to be missed!

Friday Q&A: veteran sign designer Bill Kovacevic and Matt Soar, documentary maker and director of the Montréal Signs Project.

Saturday Q&A: Curator and Solari sign programmer Danica Evering and Matt Soar, documentary maker and director of the Montréal Signs Project.
